Thekkady's Spice Country

Kumily: 4 km · Plantations: 5–25 km

Overview

Thekkady's Spice Country.

Kumily and the surrounding Idukki district produce a serious share of Kerala's cardamom, pepper, clove, nutmeg and cinnamon. Walk among the fragrant plantations, meet the growers and take home spices straight from the source.

The cool hill climate at 900 metres, high rainfall and rich forest soil make this region a natural home for spices. Cardamom plants grow under the shade of tall silver-oak trees, pepper vines climb up their trunks, and coffee, clove and nutmeg fill the spaces in between. It's an intensely aromatic landscape — the air itself smells of spice.

Guided plantation tours are the standard way to explore. A local guide walks you through a working plantation, points out the spices in the ground, on the trees and on the vines, and explains how they are grown, harvested, dried and graded. Tours typically last 1–2 hours and end at a small shop where you can taste and buy fresh produce.

For a deeper look, drive out to Vandanmedu (25 km) — one of India's largest cardamom auction centres — or to the tea estates of Vandiperiyar. Kumily town itself has a lively spice market on Thekkady Junction with dozens of small shops selling loose spices, oils, teas and Ayurvedic products.

Traveller tips

Practical notes for the visit.

Buy fresh

Green cardamom, black pepper and cinnamon quills are the standouts. Vacuum-sealed packs travel best.

Taste tea

Ask for cardamom tea at a plantation — it's poured freely and pairs beautifully with the mist.

Fair prices

Buy directly at a plantation or from the estate shops for the freshest produce at honest rates.

Ask before shooting

Most plantations welcome photos, but check with your guide before photographing workers.
